Danish Furniture

Danish Modern, based in Williamstown, Melbourne, offers vintage and contemporary Danish and Scandinavian furniture and designs. A rich history of vintage and contemporary Danish design can be experienced. Opened in 1995, Danish Modern was at the forefront of the soaring interest in Danish vintage furniture and the Danish design movement. The very first shipping container landed in September 1995 and featured stunning pieces by Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Verner Panton, Finn Juhl and Børge Mogensen and lighting, ceramics and glass by renowned mid century product designers. In an instant the pieces created an interest amongst the design lovers and quickly led to feature articles in the leading magazines. In the following years, the company has added contemporary Danish design classics to the mix, now featuring in the Danish design products spanning over 70 years in the making.
A need to preserve Danish handcraft traditions, the rise of many innovative design thinkers and a desire for a new beginning with a new approach to life, after two devastating world wars are the factors that led to the developments in aesthetics and manufacture of the Danish furniture and design in the mid century. Rise of prominent figures like Wegner, Jacobsen and Juhl in the mid century led to a new design language that was innovative and modern and the post war Scandinavian furniture movement began and the designer chair became its icon. Some of examples include the Egg chair, the Bear chair, the Chieftan chair, the Swan chair and the Ant chair.
The Danish furniture designers accepted the newly formed language of modernism and formed a new legacy which is present day’s vintage furniture classics and Danish  originals. With many award winning designers for major brands such as Eva Solo, Fritz Hansen, Flensted and Menu, the Danish design culture continues to lead the world.
